Southeastern Regional Letter (2006-07)

To all Psi Chi Members in the Southeastern Region,

My name is Michael Newlin and I am the Southeastern Regional Vice-President for Psi Chi. I want to thank you for your support over the last three years and for the nominations for Psi Chi President-Elect. I did accept the nomination, and the voting will occur during the spring semester (February 1–March 15, 2007). Thank you for your support! I sincerely hope to become Psi Chi’s President but can only do so with your support.

I am writing to update you on the Psi Chi events over the last year and let you know about the 2007 Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) Convention February 21–24, 2007. New Orleans always makes for a great convention! I hope many Psi Chi chapter officers and members can attend.

The 2006 SEPA convention in Atlanta was a wonderful experience. We truly enjoyed meeting everyone and presenting sixteen $300 student awards. Congratulations to all of the winners! The Psi Chi program was very well attended and included the following presentations/events:
  • Psi Chi/SEPA Invited Address: “Sex, Lies, and Serial Killers: The Multi-utility of Forensic Psychology” by Dr. Katherine Ramsland. Approximately 350 faculty and students attended this very interesting presentation. Afterwards, Dr. Ramsland met with approximately 50 students and faculty members for questions and discussion. She was a wonderful speaker that touched the academic and personal lives of many of the attendees. Her ability to affect and interest was remarkable. She was a truly special speaker and individual! We deeply thank her for her time and effort!

  • “Everything You Need to Know About Attending SEPA” orientation with Paula Miller, Psi Chi National Office (Executive Officer), and Chris Koch, George Fox University (2005-06 Psi Chi President)

  • “Ten Years of Management Consulting: What I Have Learned (and Can Share)” by Brian Cole, Continuous Learning Group

  • “Preparing for Graduate School I: Preparation Strategies” by Lyn Boulter, Catawba College, and Maria Lavooy, University of Central Florida

  • “Preparing for Graduate School II: The Application Process” by Maria Lavooy, University of Central Florida, and Laura May, University of South Carolina Aiken

  • There were approximately 30 faculty advisors at the Appreciation Luncheon at Azio’s Restaurant. All who attended had a wonderful time!

  • The Psi Chi Hospitality Suite was hosted by students from many chapters throughout the Southeastern region and was very well attended. It was a wonderful place to meet people and stop to have a snack or drink. The Hospitality Suite was open Thursday and Friday except during the Psi Chi/SEPA Invited Address.
The members of the 2006 Psi Chi Southeastern Regional Steering Committee are Maria Lavooy, University of Central Florida; Laura May, University of South Carolina Aiken; Lyn Boulter, Catawba College; Sandra Zackeroff, BCC (student), and Michael Hall, James Madison University.
