Western Regional Spring Letter (2008)
Dear Fellow Psi Chi Members, Chapter Officers, and Faculty Advisors,
I hope you are having a great start to your Spring semester/quarters. I would like to thank all students and faculty advisors who submitted research poster abstracts to the Western Psychological Association Conference. We had a large number of really well crafted abstracts and are glad to have chosen 8 exceptional posters to be recipients of the Regional Research Award. Award recipients will be presented with a check for $300 (shared among the authors if there is more than one author) at the Chapter Exchange on Saturday night. Please come join us for the Psi Chi hosted events we have scheduled at the WPA conference, April 10-13, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, CA (www.westernpsych.org).
The scheduled Psi Chi events are as follows: Friday 4/11/08 8am-9:30am, Psi Chi Poster Session Friday 4/11/08 10-11am, Psi Chi Invited Speaker: Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D. author of “Generation Me” Saturday 4/12/08 8am-9am, Psi Chi Advisor Breakfast in the Hyatt Hotel Restaurant (RSVP to melissa@psichi.org) Saturday, 4/12/08 2-3:30pm, Psi Chi Symposium on Graduate School Do’s and Don’ts (Salon B) Saturday 4/12/08 6-7pm, Graduate School Exchange (please contact me if you want your school to have a table) Saturday 4/12/08 7:15-9pm, Psi Chi Chapter Exchange
We strongly encourage schools that have graduate programs to have a representative at the Graduate School Exchange. Please contact me (buin@ulv.edu) if you would like to have a table for your recruitment materials. Also, all chapters are invited to attend the Psi Chi Chapter exchange to share their best practices in running a successful chapter. We will limit presentations from chapters to 10-15 minutes per chapter. Food and beverages will be provided at both the Graduate School Exchange and the Psi Chi Chapter Exchange, so please be sure to attend.
For the chapters that submitted applications for awards, I applaud your efforts and hope you continue to consider yourself, your chapter or your chapter leaders for these awards. For chapters who have yet to submit an application in past years or this year, know that Psi Chi has many awards that are not given out due to lack of applications. Remember this is FREE MONEY for you, your advisor, or your chapter! Encourage your chapter to apply for some of the following upcoming awards:
As a final reminder, if your chapter has not already done so, please consider involvement in any or all of Psi Chi's National Service Projects, which may help chapters focus their community service projects toward something the National Council feels is important for our entire organization. These projects include: Adopt-A-Shelter, Food Drives, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF, and the Archives of the History of American Psychology. Further information on all of these projects can be found at www.psichi.org/chapters/serviceprojects.asp.
I look forward to meeting many of you at the WPA convention. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions concerning Psi Chi opportunities or events.
Sincerely,
Ngoc H. Bui, Ph.D. Psi Chi Western Regional Vice-President Department of Psychology University of La Verne Telephone: (909) 593-3511 ext. 4099 1950 3rd Street Fax: (909) 392-2745 La Verne, CA 91750 Email: buin@ulv.edu
